PERSONAL STATEMENT
As a cutting-edge fashion enthusiast, I have always thrived in artistic forms of self-expression – fashion being the most important to me. It helps me create pieces of work that encapsulates and translates concepts, visually. The prospect of this course excites me, as fashion can communicate an essence of someone’s personality and character – I see it as a form of art within clothes. It has always been an interest of mine and has been something that inspires me; leading me to strive for a future in this ever-changing industry.
Studying a L3 Fashion Design course at the FRA, has expanded my outlook on my creative processes and knowledge, to be able to utilize for my future prospects in the industry. As well as teaching me valuable skills needed to work in Fashion, the L3 course has allowed me to gain expertise and insight into what this University course entails. Achieving A* grades at GCSE level in: Art, Fashion & Textiles, Performing Arts and English Language, I thrive in subjects I have profound interests in.
My decision to continue studying Fashion, taking it into further education, was due to my love of making clothes and fascination with the way in which garments, staging and make-up can impact the visual aesthetic of the pieces. I am truly intrigued as to how Fashion can be so expressive and can communicate specific intentions from refined, selective entities. It is a multi-sensory and multi-faceted subject that has so far, allowed me to experiment and delve deeper into my own personal style and signature. My ability to work well collaboratively on group projects, has led me to develop my leadership skills – allowing me to make pensive decisions and adapt to challenges I am faced with. I have used skills such as leadership in the workplace as working part of a team, for efficiency as well as training new staff members.
I currently work in my local pub as a waitress and barmaid. Over the past 3 years of working here, I have gained confidence and ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers. In this industry, I am faced with a constant need for problem solving skills and contemplative decision-making. Growing up on a family farm, in a small village, in the countryside, I was also confronted with the opinions that creative subjects were out-of-reach. My father – a traditional English farmer, and my Mother a hairdresser and barmaid; at first not so supportive of my ambition to study Fashion Design in London. Disproving these theories from a young age, I surrounded myself in the arts, having leading roles in theatre, performing in dance shows since the age of three and taking examinations every year. I received distinction grades as well as medals and decided to take an extra GCSE in Dance outside of education.
I have a profound interest by the economy, the severe decline in biodiversity and the increase in our reliance on the use of technology. I feel heavily inspired by artist – Scott Listfield – his work demonstrates how our visions of the future are far from reality, as he simultaneously raises awareness for global issues such as climate change. A way in which I contribute to help the planet, is by buying and selling sustainably. Inspired by these concepts; I used the medium of paint to further express movements such as Feminism, to disrupt our modern-day society and highlight the positive changes for the future generation.
Ultimately, I strive for excellence and nothing less. My life-long ambition is to be successful and work hard to get there. As an independent individual, from a low-income background, I have so far proved to myself I am able to achieve anything that may seem out-of-reach. I have overcome small obstacles along the way and still I am persevering to help achieve and reach my end goal. Furthermore, I am an excellent candidate for this module and would be an exceptional asset to this University.
